[For Bill and Sarah Jane]

Today was the day. And as far as Bernice was concerned, it was about bloody time. She'd been talking about making an expedition to the dinosaur territory for weeks now, and both Bill and Sarah Jane had been enthusiastic about joining her. But it was one thing after another with her illness, and the parties, and...well, general laziness really. And it wasn't like Benny to be so lackadaisical when there was a mystery to solve. Particularly not when said mystery could result in her escape from this balmy and utterly infuriating island.

Despite what Harry Sullivan had said, this wasn't just a reckless trip motivated by boredom or an addiction to danger. No, Benny had a theory. She'd been told that the dinosaurs couldn't breed, but that their numbers remained steady. There was also the fact of their being collared and contained behind the fences. It just didn't add up. So, if the animals in question were really earth dinosaurs, then perhaps the reason they didn't breed was because they were being transported to and from the island in the same way as the human inhabitants. Maybe who, or whatever was in charge of this experiment (and Bernice was convinced that's what this was) were also using the dinosaurs as subjects. To find that out, she needed to see them. And she certainly welcomed the company of two people with experience. So, Bernice packed up her usual kit and headed out to to prove or disprove her hypothesis.

And hopefully not get eaten.

Bill hadn't been to dinosaur territory in a while, so when Bernice had told him about her theory and her desire to take a trip over there, he'd been all for it. It would give him a chance for a little adventure, and in good company. Besides, he couldn't have let her go over there alone.

"Oi!" he called to Bernice as he got to their meeting spot. He was wearing his knives as usual, and had scrounged a backpack which he'd filled with the necessary provisions.

"Hello to you too!" Taking a moment to look him over, she was extremely pleased to see that he'd really prepared for this trip and hadn't just been humoring her. She supposed it shouldn't have been surprising given how excited he'd been when she'd mentioned her plan, but one never knew. "Sarah Jane should be here soon and then we can head out. Goddess, it feels good to finally be doing this."

"I'm here!" Sarah announced loudly as she made the final run, sprinting just in the event she was late after getting her things together. "I'm here, I'm here! Don't leave without me!" She arrived, breathless, and grinned at the both of them. "Well? On we go?"

"As if we'd ever dream of leaving you behind, Sarah." Benny had to return the grin as it was positively infectious. "I need the two of you to keep an eye on me. I'm the only one here who hasn't seen these beasties yet and I don't really know what to expect. If anything happens to us, I know there are at least 2 people who will have my head, so let's try our best to make it back in one piece, yeah?"

Bill was grinning as well, his usual wide smile that brightened his entire expression. "I have no doubts we'll all be making it back in one piece," he said. "What d'you reckon, Sarah? Start at the north end and work our way down?"

"Sounds perfect," Sarah pitched her contribution, offering her very best hopeful and hopeless 'pity me?' look. "I don't suppose anyone's got a second gun they'd like to let me borrow? I've got a dead-on shot."

"Oh, bugger." This was definitely not an auspicious start to the expedition and for a moment Bernice wondered if they might have to scrap the whole idea for now. "Sarah, I thought you were going to get us a gun. I haven't got any weapons on me at all. Or anywhere else, for that matter."

Turning to Bill with a plaintive look, she said, "Please tell me you have weaponry on you. We can't go there completely unarmed."

Bill gave his bowie knife a pat and raised his upper arm to indicate the throwing knife. "Just my knives, and I've got a dead-on shot with them," he said, just a bit teasingly. "But I haven't got a gun; no idea how to use one, anyhow, it's a Muggle weapon."
Nov. 20th, 2008 02:55 am (UTC)
"Oh, come on," Sarah pleaded. "We don't need the weapons and if we really, really do, I'll go pound on Jack's door until he opens up and gives them to me just so I'll be quiet and leave him alone!" Her eyes sparkled with a hint of mischief and desperation.

Benny raised her hands in surrender and laughed. "No, no. I bow to your superior knowledge of the situation, Ms. Smith. If you think Bill's knives are sufficient for our purposes than who am I to argue? Besides," she said with a wink, "I don't think I can bear any more delays either."
