[for alex]

Benny had been spending a lot of time outdoors lately. Ever since 'the incident' she'd needed to feel the open air, see the sky above her head, not be constrained by walls. Luckily, the porch of her hut was comfortable enough, particularly when she brought pillows out to sit on, and the smell of the all the greenery on the island was amazing. Wolsey seemed to be enjoying Benny's new-found love of the outdoors too, if all the time he spent sitting next to her grooming himself was any indication.

Her hand was still bandaged, though, and every day that went by she got more and more bloody annoyed at the lack of proper medical tech available. If the TARDIS had been working she'd be as good as new by now, at least physically. Instead, she had to learn to do everything left-handed, and the injury was a constant reminder. Not just of what had happened in the caves, but of all the mistakes she's made. It was making her bitter. And she couldn't tell anymore if the ache she felt was real or just in her head. She tried to convince herself it didn't matter one way or the other because even if it was imagined it still bloody hurt.

That's not to say her time in the clinic hadn't been a complete waste. She'd actually managed to score some truly excellent weed from one of the doctors in exchange for a bottle of gin. Definitely one of the better deals she'd made in a while. Starting the day with a joint, she'd slowly begun working her way through a bottle of gin. Now the sun looked like it was starting to set and she was well and truly feeling no pain. Not a bad day, all told.

It wasn't as if she'd set out to check up on Benny, Alex tells herself very reasonably; it's not as if she needs an excuse to go and visit a friend, after all.

It's not even as if she's feeling particularly nervous in the light of recent events, or certainly not that she'd admit to.

Not that she needed, apparently, to worry about it this time, she thinks, catching sight of Benny out in front of her hut.

"Professor Summerfield," she drawls, one eyebrow raised. "Out for another evening's bad influencing, I see?"
Mar. 6th, 2009 05:04 am (UTC)
"Detective Inspector Drake," she replies through the smoke of the latest joint, her smile bright and genuine. She couldn't quite remember how many she'd smoked already which, in her opinion, was an excellent indicator that the weed was working. "I can't tell you what a pleasure it is to see you. As always."

Stretching out her legs, she scooted over a bit to make some room on the pillows and tried not to blow the smoke right in Alex's face. "Come sit," she said, holding out the joint in offer. "And have some of this. It's fab."

"I am an officer of the law somewhere," Alex says pointedly. "You are aware of that."

She settles down onto the cushions, legs crossed neatly underneath her, and smiles a crooked smile over at Benny.

"There is no good reason why I shouldn't be arresting you right now. Not to mention that I haven't done this since university."

The idea of Alex whipping out a pair of handcuffs and dragging her down to the IPD is so utterly ridiculous that she can't help but laugh. The laughing leads to coughing, which in turn leads to choking, and the next thing she knows her eyes are filled with tears and she's practically doubled over.

"Don't do that," she says when she finally managed to catch her breath. "Don't be so bloody funny. At least not until you've had a toke and a drink. I refuse to be the only one of us pissed half off her nut. That just isn't on, Alexandra."

Alex groans softly in her throat, reaching over and plucking the joint neatly out of Benny's fingers before she can manage to set her own hair on fire; she holds it awkwardly, at arm's length, feeling simultaneously ridiculously young and ridiculously past it.

"All right, I am confiscating this for your own safety," she says primly. "You're liable to wander off and be eaten by a dinosaur. I'm not even going to ask how long you've been out here, I can tell I wouldn't approve of the answer."
Mar. 6th, 2009 02:41 pm (UTC)
"Yes, yes." Bernice sighed loudly and dramatically before leaning heavily against Alex. "I'll have you know that I would normally be horribly offended by your dinosaur comment. In light of recent events, however, I think the most I can get away with is a bit of a pout."

Not that Benny had any desire to talk about recent events. The whole point of the day had been to forget them for a little while. So, taking on a much more serious tone, Benny lowered her voice a bit and said, "Alex. I have a question I want to ask you but you don't have to answer if you don't want to."

Mar. 6th, 2009 11:07 pm (UTC)
"Do you?" It can't be much more than suggestion, Alex thinks, but she'd swear she's starting to get light-headed just from proximity to the smoke; she doesn't mind, really, not half as much as she should.

She elbows Benny lightly, careful of any remaining injuries. "Bear in mind that as Gene Hunt's ranking officer on this island, I reserve the right to shove you over and steal your drink if I bloody well feel like it."
Mar. 7th, 2009 12:01 am (UTC)
"Alexandra Drake, you bloody idiot. I would happily and willingly give you any and all of my drinks. Freely and with no coercion necessary." Benny took a swig of said drink before offering the bottle to her with a bit of dramatic flourish. "All yours, love."

The comment about Gene made her want to ask Alex how she was feeling about him being gone, but they seemed to be on the cusp of a somewhat angst-free evening, which was practically unheard of for them recently. She didn't feel much like spoiling the mood.

"And yes. I do, in fact, have a question. " Turning to face Alex, she reached out and wrapped one of the other woman's curls around her finger. "How in the bloody hell do you keep your hair looking so good? We're on a damned deserted tropical island, woman. Did you show up here with a secret stash of beauty products or something?"
Mar. 7th, 2009 04:33 am (UTC)
"That's it. I'm not going to be the only sober one in this conversation."

Alex looks from Benny to the bottle in her hand to the joint burning down in her own; thinks, deliberately, sod it, and takes a long, showy drag, almost immediately ruining the effect when she doubles over coughing.

"Christ, I knew I gave that up for a reason. And I've got no idea about my hair. It just does that, it never used to."
Mar. 7th, 2009 04:53 am (UTC)
Watching Alex's coughing fit was one of the funniest things Benny had seen in ages. Or at least it seemed that way in her current state. She couldn't stop giggling even as she pat the other woman on the back. "Breathe, Alex. That's it. Deep breaths." She considered telling her that all the coughing was just going to get her high faster, but she figured Alex would discover that on her own soon enough. And it really was excellent pot.

"Oh, and you are a big giant liar. You just don't want to share your brilliant hair care secrets with me." Benny gave her a mock scowl. "And don't think I'm just going to forget this either."
Mar. 7th, 2009 05:52 am (UTC)
"I'm going to be extremely surprised if you remember any of this." Alex clears her throat, trying not to start laughing, and leans over against Benny. "And you honestly are a dreadful influence. Where did you come up with this, anyway?"
Mar. 7th, 2009 04:35 pm (UTC)
Benny was still grinning from ear to ear, completely relaxed for the first time in too long. Alex's weight against her was oddly comforting and if she'd been in any sort of state to consider it, she probably would have been surprised at how much better she'd gotten about accepting that kind of contact.

"One of the doctors at the clinic, if you can believe that. I think she took over Nancy's crop after Nancy disappeared. Did you ever meet her?" She tried to remember when the woman had left, but it was no use. "A bit of a strange one, but goddess could she grow pot."
Mar. 9th, 2009 02:37 am (UTC)
"Mmm. Sorry. Rings a bell somewhere, I think."

She takes a slightly more cautious drag, clearing her throat hard; her bronchial tubes seem a bit better inclined to things this time around, even if that's only really a good sign to the part of her that thinks any of this is a good idea.

"Of course, if we were doing this properly, we'd have some music on, but I don't suppose you know anyone who's come up with a coconut-powered tape deck or anything."
Mar. 9th, 2009 03:55 am (UTC)
"Well. Aren't you Miss glass-half-empty today." Benny stretched out as she said it, wiggling a bit on the pillows and bumping Alex in the process. "Here you are on a beautiful night, drinking real booze, smoking quality weed, and enjoying the company of one of the most fun, and dare I say attractive, people you know. Coconut powered whatevers be damned."
Mar. 9th, 2009 05:02 am (UTC)
"Of course," Alex sighs. "University flashbacks. Sorry. Be patient with me, I've been working in law enforcement."

She settles back down as well, hissing through her teeth as the joint starts to burn down near her fingers.

"Shit, this one's going. I have to warn you, strictly from memory here, but we might be coming up on the part where I lie here for ten minutes talking too much and telling you I don't feel anything yet."
Mar. 9th, 2009 05:23 am (UTC)
Benny turned to face Alex, narrowing her eyes and really looking at her for an extended moment in the manner of the well and truly high. "You're bloody adorable. Anyone ever tell you that?"

She continued to watch the other woman, taking in details she hadn't ever really considered before. The curl of her hair, the shape of her face, the arch of her eyebrows. Looking at them in separate bits before working out how they all fit together. Benny had never been much of a pot smoker, always finding alcohol to be much more her poison. She'd forgotten how much fun it could be sometimes.

"Oh, and don't worry about that." she said, gesturing to the rapidly shrinking joint. "I've got plenty more if you decide you really don't feel anything and it isn't just you being a loon. I mean I traded a whole bottle of gin for it. I've got enough weed now to last me quite a while."
Mar. 13th, 2009 04:30 am (UTC)

Alex turns the word around in her mouth, almost grinning at the absolute unlikeliness of it.

"Not recently, no. Messed-up, angry, lonely, uptight, humorless, borderline alcoholic, too posh for my own good, amazing fuck -- or possibly that was amazingly fucked, that honestly seems more likely."

She catches herself giggling softly and groans, squeezing her eyes shut.

"Please tell me I'm not already being ridiculous. We'll have to call it the power of suggestion."
Mar. 14th, 2009 12:11 am (UTC)
"I'm going to assume that we can thank Gene Hunt for most of those colorful adjectives? What you saw in that man I'll never know." Benny had a few choice adjectives for him, but she didn't think Alex would appreciate her insulting the man no matter how much he deserved it. Especially now that he was gone and it was clear how much Alex missed him. The bloody git.

"And no, you aren't being ridiculous. Yet. I promise to let you know the moment you are." Benny smiled and turned to watch Alex giggling, looking more happy and relaxed than she had in ages. She'd forgotten how good the other woman looked when she was at peace. "You are going to either burn yourself or set my hut on fire, though, if you aren't more careful."

Reaching over to grab the hand Alex was holding the joint with, Benny raised it to her own mouth for one last hit. The smell of the other woman's fingers and the taste of her lips on the burning paper made it just that much sweeter. She smiled while she exhaled, Alex's hand still clutched in her own.
Mar. 14th, 2009 01:44 am (UTC)
"I've got no idea," Alex says thoughtfully. "I don't even want to know what he might have come up with if I had shagged him. Probably would have never heard the end of it."

She wrinkles her nose in Benny's direction, pouting without making any noteworthy effort to pull her hand away. It's nice, when she doesn't think much about it, just being touched; it makes her feel slightly less insubstantial than she's already starting to, at least.

"Oh God, you're going to be another one of those stoned people with absolutely no concept of personal space, aren't you?"
Mar. 14th, 2009 01:53 am (UTC)
Alex's comment makes her choke as she tries to laugh in the middle of blowing out smoke and she ends up with tears in her eyes. "I thought I told you to stop being funny when I'm trying to smoke. It's bloody dangerous." Still holding onto Alex's hand, Benny manoeuvers it down to an empty spot of porch and stubs out the remnant of the joint before it could burn their fingers.

"Oh, and the answer to your question is a resounding yes." As proof, she lifted Alex's hand back to her mouth and made a show of kissing her fingertips. Smiling, she gave the other woman a wink. "Didn't want to singe your lovely skin."

Mar. 14th, 2009 02:48 am (UTC)
"Yes, but you'd laugh if I burned the bloody house down," Alex points out. "You'd laugh if I told you about the weather. It's not as if that's exactly my fault."

She tugs a bit playfully at her hand, not quite minding when Benny doesn't return it immediately.

"When you feel like letting go, then, I think I've probably got some catching up to do yet."
Mar. 14th, 2009 02:56 am (UTC)
Benny smiled from ear to ear and gave a little squeeze before finally letting go. "Well, I wouldn't want to stand in the way of your inebriation."

She considered going inside to get another joint, but the idea of getting up was completely unappealing. No matter the potential reward. Beside the fact that Alex seemed to be feeling no pain already, so she decided it could wait.

"So, tell me. Have you done anyone interesting lately or are we still working on that? Because I think I spotted a few potentials at the last party." Thinking back to Mardi Gras, she flushed a bit from embarrassment. "Well, at least I did before having to be carried out."
Mar. 14th, 2009 04:29 am (UTC)
"Still working on it." Alex sags backwards, groping for the gin bottle with her newly-released hand. "Meaningless sex is turning out to be a bit of an issue under the circumstances. As I'm sure you must have noticed."

She fumbles the bottle open one-handed, sitting -- with some difficulty -- halfway up to drink.

"And you can forget the other variety. I wasn't exactly up for that even when I was reasonably positive the other party wasn't going to literally disappear on me."
Mar. 14th, 2009 04:43 am (UTC)
"Goddess, Alex. You love to torture yourself, don't you? I'm starting to think maybe you get off on the drama." Benny grinned when she saw her start to go boneless, and felt more connected to her than she to anyone since being on the island. She knew the drugs and booze were playing a large part in that, but it didn't matter. It was still real enough.

"Everyone disappears eventually, you know. And I promise you, meaningless shags and true love are not your only options." Without thinking about it, Benny turned to face Alex before reaching over and putting her hand on the back of the other woman's neck. She waited a beat, watching Alex's expression and really looking at her, before closing the distance and kissing her.
Mar. 14th, 2009 08:06 am (UTC)
Alex makes a small, startled, largely inaudible noise in the back of her throat; she goes still, her eyes flickering closed on reflex, and for a second it's nearly right, Benny's mouth soft on hers and tasting of gin and smoke.

For a second the drink and the drugs and how bloody long it's been are enough, nearly, to let her relax into it, to ignore the panicky little fluttering thing in the back of her mind.

"Oh, God," she breathes. "Oh, Christ. Shit. When you mentioned the personal space problem --"
